Hours Schedule and How to Become a Member

Over the last month, the Elgin Parks & Recreation Department has received 9 tree donations for the historic Elgin Memorial Park. In the last few weeks, the Elgin Parks & Recreation staff have planted two almond trees, a peach tree, a pear tree, American sycamore, weeping willow, river birch, loblolly pine and filbert tree, generously donated by the public.

The best time to plant trees in Texas is in the Fall, but these colder weeks have provided us with the opportunity to sneak in some plantings. If you are looking to celebrate a birthday, remember a loved one, or just want to make an impact in your local park, planting a tree is a wonderful way to recognize those special moments in life. If you’d like to make a tree donation, you can reach out to The Friends of Elgin Parks at
friendsofelginparks@gmail.com, call 512-285-6434 or bring your tree you’d like to plant on November 2nd to Elgin Memorial Park where we will be hosting a Texas Arbor Day Celebration.

Be sure to check out the new trees in Elgin Memorial Park when you visit, and remember, as the Greek Proverb says; “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

Program Guides are in!

Our Program Guides cover Parks & Recreation Events that run through September 2019 and can be picked up at the Elgin Recreation Center, Chamber of Commerce building and select businesses around Elgin. Be sure to check out the Program Guide, where you’ll not only find our upcoming events, but our Rec Membership rates and perks, Facility Rental options and information on the Morris Pool Season.

Teen Council

Elgin Rec Center Teen Council

The Elgin Parks and Recreation Department is introducing our Teen Council – an organization founded to create new and innovative events/programs for Elgin Area teens and young adults while offering real world experience. At each meeting, we’ll discuss the practicalities of hosting an event as well as brainstorming new ideas for engaging programming, how to advertise for them and how to manage a budget. The Teen Council is designed to not only help the Parks and Recreation Department create targeted events and programming for teens and young adults but provide the opportunity for our Council members to gain valuable work experience and receive service hours. Through this council, we hope that teens will be able to explore their interests and learn more about how our governmental department functions as well as the practical applications of budgeting and planning.

By joining the Teen Council members will work directly with the Program Manager of the Parks and Recreation Department of Elgin, TX, and have access to similar resources as those provided to the actual Parks Department. Participants will work as a team to walk through each other’s thoughts and come up with actionable plans, then come to a consensus on which event to pursue and bring it to
reality. Plus, of course, there will be pizza and soda!

Our upcoming dates are:

  • March 12th, 6-8PM
  • March 26th, 6-8PM
  • April 9th, 6-8PM

If you’re interested in becoming a leader to your peers, join Teen Council by coming to a meeting, emailing parks@ci.elgin.tx.us, or stopping by the front desk of the Elgin Recreation Center to pick up an application.
